The homeowner contacted us after noticing an unusual clunking noise from the AC system when switching to heat. Our technician performed a complete diagnostic to determine whether the noise was caused by a mechanical problem.
Problem
Unusual Clunking Noise When the System Ran
The homeowner noticed a clunking noise from the AC unit when the system was switched to heat and wanted to make sure there wasn’t a serious mechanical issue.
Because unusual sounds can sometimes indicate a problem with an HVAC system, a full diagnostic was performed before recommending any repairs.
Inspection
A Full System Check Found No Mechanical Failure
The technician inspected the system and checked its operation to identify the source of the noise.
Key finding:
- No mechanical problems were identified during the diagnostic.
- The outdoor condenser was heavily covered with dust and dryer lint.
- The buildup was affecting airflow through the outdoor unit.
Rather than recommending an unnecessary repair, the focus shifted to correcting the maintenance-related issue.
Diagnosis
Restricted Outdoor Airflow Was the Main Concern
The condenser’s exterior was significantly impacted by accumulated dust and lint, which can restrict the airflow the outdoor unit needs to operate efficiently.
While the inspection did not reveal a mechanical failure responsible for the reported noise, the condition of the condenser showed that the system needed preventive maintenance.
Recommendation
Protect the Condenser Before Debris Builds Up Again
The technician completed the first maintenance service during the visit and recommended installing a leaf guard filter for the outdoor condenser.
This can help reduce the amount of leaves and other outdoor debris entering and collecting around the condenser, making it easier to keep the unit clean between maintenance visits.
Preventive maintenance included:
- Full system diagnostic
- Inspection of system operation
- Outdoor condenser maintenance
- Cleaning/removal of accumulated debris
- Maintenance plan enrollment
- Recommendation for a condenser leaf guard

Before & After: Outdoor Condenser Maintenance
No Major Mechanical Issue Found—Maintenance Put the System Back on Track
The diagnostic did not uncover a mechanical failure requiring repair. Instead, the technician identified significant debris buildup affecting the outdoor condenser’s airflow, completed the first maintenance service, and helped the homeowner establish a preventive maintenance routine.
The homeowner also signed up for a maintenance plan and received a recommendation for a leaf guard to help protect the condenser from future debris buildup.
